Lord Shiva is known by the name Pinakin because he holds the special bow, Pinaka. Therefore, he became an ascetic who would wander around and beg food in the skull. Shiva cut off the fifth head of Brahma out of a misunderstanding but was remorseful of his actions when he came to know the truth. It is another avatar of the lord that brings destruction but in an artistic manner. This is why the he is known by the name Bhairav – Kaal Bhairav being the deity of annihilation, a manifestation of Lord Shiva himself. The lord is not always the big-hearted simpleton and at times, he can be the fiercest face of destruction. The mighty lord can be appeased by just offering a glass of water and Asuras would often take advantage of such lion-heartedness of lord Shiva. ‘Bhole’ in Hindi means innocent, gullible and easy to please. Shiva’s innocent benevolence is the reason behind the name.
